GUIDANCE & RESOURCES
Here is some information that may be helpful to you if you are thinking about taking up therapy for whatever reason.

If you or someone you know are thinking about working with a clinical psychologist you are probably wondering what the experience might feel like. Therapy is unique to every individual, so it is not easy to convey what this experience might be like on a website. For that reason, it is always best to make an appointment to have an exploratory assessment, so you and your psychologist can think together as to what might be helpful for you.

There are some things however, that I can tell you a bit about on this website, such as why people come and see a clinical psychologist. Evidence tells us that physical and mental health are closely linked. Often, for example, someone who feels tired all the time, sleeps badly, often feels unwell, with unexplained aches, pains and upsets, can be suffering from emotional distress. Some people have more obvious feelings of low mood, negative thoughts about themselves, their future and the world, or they might feel anxious and stressed all the time.

They might even have had a frightening and seemingly unexplainable panic attack, or they might feel frightened of speaking or eating in public, or feel that they have strange obsessions and compulsions that are intrusive and hard to control. They might have been the victim of a trauma, a frightening accident, an attack, or have been sexually or emotionally abused.

They might have problems with their physical health, for example, chronic pain, chronic fatigue or high blood pressure. They might have sexual problems, marital conflict, or a bereavement, which they are finding hard to come to terms with. If you, or someone you know, are experiencing any of these problems, you are not alone, it is estimated that at any one time in the UK one in four people are experiencing emotional problems.
